We've been asked many times to evaluate implementations that are in progress or that have been recently completed. We see 4 typical and costly things that are forgotten, not considered or undervalued (by the Enterprise Project Management (EPM) software vendors) during an implementation.  

A sustainable and successful Earned Value Management System Implementation requires much more than just EVM tools; it requires a thoughtful approach to people, processes and tools and strong Senior Management support. A focus on change management is also needed to ensure an EVMS Implementation is fully adopted.

You don’t need to look far to find examples of underperforming or failed Enterprise Project Management (EPM), Project Portfolio Management (PPM) and Earned Value Management (EVM) Systems.  Studies show that 30-40% of senior management view their current Enterprise Project Management as being unsuccessful, or not delivering the expected Return on Investment.

Many Enterprise Project Management implementations live or die based on their ability to implement Critical Path Method techniques (CPM) across the organization. Other’s have a critical need to optimize scarce, expensive and shared resources. Organizations make a significant investment in an implementation, but may fail against their original objectives because of the difficulty of implementing CPM.

Implementing Enterprise Project Management is about Adopting a consistent set of core project management practices across an organization. Typical “off the shelf” generic training for project management techniques or project management software tools is very ineffective in promoting Adoption. It can enhance an individual’s resume but has little impact on an organization’s ability to implement Enterprise Project Management and manage their projects more effectively. 

Project Portfolio Management, or PPM, is a project management discipline aimed at managing project investments in a way that maximizes results, or return, to the organization. 

Virtually none of the Earned Value Management consulting companies address the real challenge in implementing Earned Value Management system, which is  Adoption.
